We are now in the hurricane season and for us Caribbean people we hold our breaths and whisper silent prayers hoping that the season does not bring us destruction, homelessness and loss of love ones.
Jamaica is said to be a land of wood and water but the disturbance of the elements after the onslaught of a hurricane it is likely that water will become contaminated.
In such times home water purification should be on the fore front of every one's mind. The water is usually contaminated by sand blown in from the sea, along with many air transported pollutants. The rivers are usually in a spate churning and raging, spitting muddied, contaminated water.
In case you were stranded on the island after a hurricane it is imperative that you take precaution to purify your water.This is the time when water borne diseases spread like wild fire bringing in their wake death from gastroenteritis, typhoid fever and sometimes cholera. Preventing contamination is much better than curing the diseases.
There is a simple method that individuals can use to insure that their families consume water that has gone through the simple home water purification method. The commercial water purifier can be used but they may be unavailable at that time or worst yet there maye no electricity.This simple fairly cheap economical method may be the difference between life and death. Before the hurricane strike employed precautionary measures listed below
- 1. Before the hurricane store water into clean, tightly shut containers
- 2. Use clean contains with a handle to dip up water
- 3. Do not store water into containers that contained chemicals
- 4. where there is no safe water purify using the following method
Water......Bleach.......Standing time
1 liter.......1 drop .......30 mins
20 gals.....!/2.....tsp......30 mins,
170 gals....41/2 tsps......30 mins

How about chemicals?
There is a way to purify water by boiling it,then filtering it through disposable paper coffee filters or clean cotton material with activated charcoal along with it.Aquarium charcoal filters should do.
Another option is boiling water and condensing the steam produced above the pot so the water droplets that form there will flow into another container next to it.You can use another metal pot larger than the one the boiling water is in to condense the steam into water drops.Just tilt it to one side so the water droplets flow into a third pot next to the one with the boiling water.What ever you use to condense the steam into water droplets is clean as well as the container the water droplets flow into.with this method you don't need a filter or charcoal,but if you have them it couldn't hurt to use them anyway.If,fuel for heat is not available you can use a fresnel lens to heat the water with the sun.More than one is probably best they are not expensive and they work very well to focus the sun onto the metal pot.Pure Silver metal in water can disinfect water after being in contaminated water for a certain amount of time and wood has been proven to do the same thing over time as well.Of course these two methods would be a last resort or in addition to using the other methods available.You can't be too safe when it comes to drinking water.
