Paypal: six dollars to six thousand dollars scam

I recently came across an article posted as a comment on Hubpages and have quoted part of the comments below.

Quote “$$ The 6 Dollar Investment "PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST" Works ! $$$ "AS SEEN ON OPRAH" All the posts in regard to sending $1 to 6 people do work. Follow the instructions and be honest.

Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it. It follows the same regulations as the "mailed chain letters, which according to the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161-800-725-2161) is indeed legal.

Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!? Within 7 days, I started getting money in my PayPal account. I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $20.00. By the end second week I had made a total over $1,200.00.

It's certainly worth $6.00. I have spent more than that on the lottery. Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works? Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it

What you are doing is creating a service by this and best of all you are not giving your address to anyone you do not know ... THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! The Email List:1)

(I think there are close to 32,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make - as well as everyone else on the list $$ DIRECTIONS “End of Quote”

I decided to investigate ,since my curiosity was pricked , I decided to invest the $6.00 win or loose. What the person did not say is you were to make sure the country that you enter your email from is eligible to send and receive payment. When I tried to pay the individuals they were only eligible to send money from their country not receive. It seems they were all from Kenya. Paypal said that at present paypal accounts in Kenya are only eligible to send money not to receive. So there you go the six names  could have sent money by paypal but could not receive any so they have lost their six dollars if they had foolish ennough to have paid..

The person said it is completely legal but is this so this is like another version of the  same letter I came across circulating, only this time the individuals gave real  post office addresses of six persons to post the money to.

Here is something we all should be aware of.There is at least one problem with chain letters. They're illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants. Chain letters are a form of gambling, and sending them through the mail (or delivering them in person mail box or by computer, or mailing money to participate) violates Title 18, United States Code, Section 1302, the Postal Lottery Statute.

However (Chain letters that ask for items of minor value, like picture postcards or recipes, may be mailed, since such items are not things of value within the meaning of the law.) but requesting money is illegal

I found it very strange that all the addresses came from Kenya .I suppose that this letter originated there and Paypal recognize them as chain addresses from that country and blocked them I am not sure about this it is just an assumption .I started to examine the letter more closely and found something rather interesting

It was not all about this $6.00 payment to the six email addresses but the individual was promoting a product address which seem to be a affiliate partners programme and would make money if you join up from that link. They knew Paypal was not going to send the money., and the worst part of all this you could get your email banned too for spamming for posting the same letter  in the 200 news they suggested..

Individuals who create these schemes are very ingeneous .It did not stop there, on top of all that the individual posted a phone number for individuals to call a postal office for verification if the letter is a chain letter, this also was a way for the individual to make money if the numbers were dialed . One would have made the call only to hear that this is indeed a type of chain letter since it was requesting payment of money to be sent to six individual on a mailing list.

There are many such scheme that come up daiy you need to get the latest alerts on these schemes since they come in all types of forms.

Do not get me wrong about this there are individuals who will see this as an ingeneous method of making money on the internent and are willing to take the chance of loosing $6.00 . if you are one them as the many others who have tried by following the instructions in the quoted sections of article.be careful. Some say they have made  reasonable sums of money when they get people with varified paypal accounts who can send and receive payment to be a part of the scheme..
